How long does a person have to be married to another in order to collect their S.S. when they pass?

My stepfather won’t get a job, and he worked my mother to death for 14 yrs. while he laid on the couch. She passed away about a yr.ago and now he’s brought his ex-wife and son from a previous marriage to his trailer(he’s life-estated on MY lot). She has cancer, is a chain-smoker in a wheelchair and collects S.S., he’s after her check to support himself when she dies and I’m sick of his lazy, scheming B.S.. If he remarries and she passes away, when can he collect her S.S..? Anything to keep from getting a job, he’s only 57. My mother was 14 yrs. older

I belive it is ten years. My best friend lost her ex husband last Sept. at age 38. They had been divorced for years but she never remarried he did. When it came time to file for her and his kids togethers Social Security after he passed she was informed she got to collect as well. His new wife did not because the day he died was one day from their first anniversary, even though that didnt matter because they said she had to be married to him for 10 years before she could collect.
