Type Stethoscope
i want to hear my baby’s heartbeat with a stethoscope. do i need to get a particular one or will any do?
i’m almost 21 weeks pregnant and since it’s my first, even though i think i might have felt him (or her) moving once or twice, i’m not sure. i would like to be able to check for a heartbeat (knowing that i might not be able to find it and i won’t freak out if i can’t) on my own.
my husband wants me to get a 15$ stethoscope that mechanics use but i can’t imagine that that would work. would it? do i have to get a specific kind/quality of stethoscope to have a good chance at hearing the heartbeat? what type should i buy?
i know there are dopplers i can buy or rent but i’m not convinced that they’re completely safe to use frequently (and i keep forgetting to ask my doctor) so i’d rather try a stethoscope.

i wasn’t suggesting that dopplers give off radiation. it’s the vibration that’s bounced off the baby that ‘could’ be problematic. not likely but i’ve heard that it could be disruptive (or something) if you use it too often or for too long at once.
I think that you should be able to.
You would need to make sure that you’re no where near your own heart so press against the baby around your pelvic area to ensure a clear beat.
