How can one touch ultra test strips work?

I opened the machine and it seems that there are two electrodes that run between the blood and I suppose the computer makes the equation. Apparently, the band only acts as a blood plate. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or if the strip itself is a chemical in it, etc. Thanks

I've been using one of these meters to my daughter 10 + times a day for over a year, but never thought about how it works.
