I dont know what to do about my Knee Brace?

I had a knee arthroscopy 2 weeks ago and on friday i fell directly onto it causing it to really really hurt. As i have been in physio since the op the straightening of my leg got easier and was almost back to normal, now after my fall i cant straighten it again and i have noticed alot of swelling round my ankle?? I then went to A&E and there was nothing wrong with my ankle eg broken bones, but they have given me a knee brace and crutches just for protection of my knee which i have to wear for 2 weeks, is this necessary? I dont understand why i have to wear them as i can walk but my leg does hurt when it extend backwards in walking?
And also i am a dancer and in high training, and i really want to get back into it but my knee is still swollen after 2 weeks is this normal??

Lauren, you can do whatever you wish with the brace. This is a choice that you make as in reality the brace is not going to do much of anything. As for the knee try this. When you are in physical therapy hopefully they have resistance equipment. Always start the exercises with your uninjured leg first. Do a set of 10 to 15 repetitions and then rest for 1 minute. Repeat this cycle twice more with each cycle attempt to do more weight. Upon completion of the last set rest for 1 minute and then do the injured leg the same way. Do this with the entire leg not just with the knee. The leg needs to recover and to do so it needs more strength from the hip down to the foot. The knee will recover without problems. As for the swelling at the ankle level just remember that fluid drops when stored in a cylinder and that is just what your leg is. So if there was any swelling at the knee it is going to drop to the ankle level. Not being able to move the knee tells me that you have swelling there and so eventually it gets to the ankle.
