Is it possible to have two different valid Blood Pressure Readings, one in the left arm and one in the right?

Someone told me he took his BP before his Pack test for the Fire Dept & they wouldn’t allow him to take the test because his BP is his left arm was 200 over 120 and in his right arm it was 170 over 110. Is that possible to have two different readings?

Not only is it possible, it is normal to have 2 different readings in each arm. They say the left arm gives the true reading because it is closest to the heart. You should take 3 readings in the left arm (not all at the same time) to see if you are getting a true reading. 200/120 is extremely high and if that were the true reading he would need medication as he could have a stroke or heart attack. It is always lower in the right arm so he needs to keep a check on the left arm. If it continues to be high he needs to see a Dr ASAP. I was put on BP pills when my BP was 180/120, the Dr just about had a cow, he said I was ready to have a stroke. I should mention I went to see him because of headaches. After my BP came down the headaches got some better. I also get red in the face when it is up. Now a lot of times it goes too low and I have to stop taking my pills for a few weeks or so. Please keep a check on a BP that high, you are supposed to take a BP in the left arm and if it is high repeatedly you need to see a Dr. Do NOT depend on a true reading from the right arm, there should not be that big of a difference in BP from each arm. I taught BP readings when I was a paramedic and that is just too far off the normal.
