Split footpads?

My dog is 7 years old. Hes a cross Rhodesian Ridgeback and has always had problems with their feet. But now one of his pads seems to have split open and theres a patch of pink flesh. Hes limping badly. I wonder if I should be soaked in salt water or if there is anything else I can do to help it heal. All responses appreciated. thanks:)
