Where does the expression "Going To adrift" comes?

I was talking with an employee of a funeral. In his garage was a long and narrow wicker basket. I suppose in the days before metal folding stretchers Lightweight wheels, would have been ideal for transporting bodies. Lightweight, but strong. Thus I asked if that was the origin of the phrase. He did not know. Does anyone know for sure?
