Let me start by saying that I fully understand their dilemma. I also use a FreeStyle Flash meter. I have insurance, but insurance will not cover the cost of the strips, so I know exactly how expensive they are. I test 3-4 times a day, so strips for about $ 100 a month. One option that might work for you is to consult with your local health department. There pharmacy assistance programs in place in most areas to help with the cost of medicines, strips, etc. The only factor that will be your income, since most of the programs are based on annual income. There could be a diabetes program at the place where the health department that could help you get some free or low cost strips. (I work for one of these programs!) They get a call .. worth a shot to see what options are there. Also, consider consulting with social services on the help of medication. Again, this will depend on earnings, but it never hurts to try. If all else fails, although I am a big fan of my free style, a change in the subway could be a solution. There are several different out there and many of them, like the Freestyle, are all about allowing you to test the arms, etc in instead of fingers. Talk to your doctor and see if he or she can help, or at least make some recommendations. Good luck and best wishes …
