Evil Eye in Religion
The evil eye is a commonly known concept in folklore, but evil eye in religions is also a controversial topic. Since it affected people’s beliefs, various religions addressed it as well. But first things first, what is the evil eye? In a nutshell, giving the evil eye means sending someone a malicious gaze that, in most cultures, is believed to be a sign of envy and can send destructive energies to another person. In short, it’s like sending harm to the person one is envious of.
The evil eye in religion is considered from two viewpoints. First, it is a weapon that can harm people. Second, it is a trap that people can fall into. So in religion, people are not only protected from the effects of evil eye, but are also warned not to fall into the temptation to give someone an evil eye.
The evil eye in religions is faced with different reactions. Different cultures also have different ways of protecting against it. For example, Indians believed in the removal of the effects of the evil eye in a Hindu ritual which involved rotating a holy flame around the face of the inflicted person so that the effects will be absorbed. Several other rituals are also known to do the same thing. In some countries, such as Bangladesh, large black-colored dots are placed on a person’s forehead as a protection from the evil eye.
The Greeks, on the other hand, believed in xematiasma, a process where a healer recites a prayer that is passed over from a grandparent. This prayer is not to be revealed in just any situation. It is said that there are many versions of the prayer. The Muslims also have a prayer, which is the Zoroastrian prayer, used to protect and counter the effects of evil eye.
The ancient Romans, however, believed in using charms and ornaments that protected against the evil eye. In Latin, an evil eye charm is called fascinum, a name taken from the word fascinare, or fascinate in English. This word can be taken to mean “to cast a spell,” just like what is done when someone gives an evil eye.
The means of protecting against the evil eye as used by the Romans have been adopted by most believers of the evil eye. A lot of these believers now rely on evil eye jewelry such as evil eye bracelets and pendants, among many others.
