In nursing, how often should you change a patient’s brief (diaper) for someone who is bed ridden?
Im a nursing student and this hasn’t been clearly taught
Howdy fellow nurse ! I am a Registered General Nurse. Bedridden patients should be turned every 2 hours – this is part of good pressure area care. Some patients will be catheterised, but their bowels will still need attending to. Always change patients after a shower or bathing with a clean diaper – never re-use old diapers as I have seen done! They should be checked when doing pressure area care for sores, red marks, or for anything that needs attending to, and changed. U will get to know the smell emanating from patients as to whether or not they need changing – like smelling a baby’s bottom to see if they have done a wee or poohed – but some patients have on the extra absorbent diapers (nappies), so they may not need changing if they have just weed. Nevertheless if unsure always wash a patient if they smell, or if the skin looks red, infected, etc and change them. This will not only make u a better nurse, but ensures ur patients receive excellence in nursing care.
