Carrier Rack
whats best, a roof rack for a bike, or a rear boot carrier?
Recently bought a new road bike, and am unsure which is the best way to transport it in the car, a roof rack, or one of the boot carriers you can buy?? Any advice gratefully received!!
They all work.
I personally prefer in the car. protected from dirt, rain and bugs, but unless you have a hatchback or station wagon it may require taking both wheels off.
A top carrier works well particularly if the bike is a tandem or there are several bikes, and anything else to carry … e.g a bike plus luggage box or canoe/ kayak/windsurfer. It’s the most difficult place to reach though, and bugs are sure to hit the bike, and it’s definitely an aerodynamic pig..
A boot carrier is cheaper but arguably the least secure. A friend of mine had one droop when a strap loosened and he ground off the rear tire as he drove.
A 4th option is a carrier that fits into a towing hitch receiver. These are both secure and convenient to use. since the bikes are lower than a rooftop carrier.
