How do I know when its healed?

A week ago I accidentally closed the finger in the door of my car. My husband (who is an EMT) took up an key and the ribbon at the pharmacy and stabilize the finger. It swelled up pretty good and I'm pretty sure it was broken at or just below the joint closest the fingertip. The swelling has gone down, and hand but are still quite beaten. I want to know if anyone knows how long to keep the finger was prepared and recorded? I unwrap at night to shower and still can not curl the finger. Any idea or if someone else has done this please help me out. And NO I did not go to a doctor because now uninsured and do not want to pay $ 300.00 for something that my husband could do.

The best bet is to get x-rays to make sure that the bones are at least aligned. If it were a toe, I would not worry about it and keep re-splinting for 4-6 weeks (normal time for a fracture to heal). You do not want permanent damage to a finger, although the functionality of a finger for $ 300? There can be a doctor, but it is my professional advice as a paramedic! Good luck!
