Can a blood transfusion is used to change your blood type?
A woman I work with said his cousin received a transfusion blood to change from A to A + (or vice versa), because his mother was the opposite type, and at birth had a problem rhesus negative (I do not know all the details). He said this happened before the shots were available (sometime in the late 50s, early 60's). Is it possible to change the blood type a person entirely? What is its function of organs? I do not know enough about our pyhsiology to know if this would work. Help me out?
No, a transfusion can not change your blood type. First, red blood cells that are received through the transfusion of only last for a short period time (less than 120 days) before they are destroyed by the body. Red blood cells are produced by the bone marrow. Thus it can be transfused into a patient all what they want, but transfusions of red blood cells die and are replaced by the patient's own red blood cells from your bone marrow, which will be his original blood type, as determined by your genetics. I also have the opposite type of the blood of my mother (I'm sure that it is negative) and also born before the injection. It requires changing a person's blood type.
