What will happen to all those electric car batteries?
All these new electric cars will have new batteries that will be rechargeable. As far as I am aware those types of batteries are hazardous waste. What will be done with them? Where will they go?
So is your question “are they hazqardous waste? Or is it, “can they be recycled?”
There are several configurations for electric vehicles. We have been using electric trains in the US for over 100 years. Battery disposal has not been an issue because they get their power transmitted to them. While much of the research has been on battery electric vehicles there has been some research on induction pickup that might be implanted in pathways or using overhead wires. There is a body of usage here and we may eventually see this kind of solution for high trafficed areas.
The use of a genset trailer to create a series hybrid is also old technology. The earliest submarines were diesel-electrics as are many trains that are not purely electric vehicles.
As battery configuration developes some batteries will be more recyclable than others. Some capacitors may be made of nothing more than thin coatings of materials and cardboard which will have very little mass and be 100% recyclable.
We can bring future unknown worries to the present and dwell on them or we can attempt to resolve issues as they come up. It is usually a more certain course to deal with issues as they become clear. This issue is only speculation at this point.
