Would you trade the use of your legs for a lifetime of painkillers and SSI checks?

Yes, the question is would you rather be a paraplegic (in a power wheelchair) who daily consumes the painkiller of your choice and never has to work again, OR retain the use of your legs and work a hard-labor job the whole of your life.

Where is the option for being paraplegic and working for my money in a desk job?

I’m lucky and don’t get too much pain so I’m not on bucket loads of painkillers anymore. If they want to run SSI checks on me they’ll see I’m not cheating anyone out of anything so I’ve got nothing to worry about there.

I think my life is better now than it was before my accident. My relationship with my husband is better – we talk more. I have less friends around me but at least I know that the friends I do have are genuine. I enjoy my job, it’s more interesting than the slightly more physical job that I did before my accident. If I was taken back in time to the afternoon of the accident I wouldn’t do anything differently.

Also, why would your hypothetical paraplegic be in a power wheelchair? I know a lot of paraplegics and none of them use powerchairs. Some tetraplegics use powerchairs but they are not paraplegic.
